Research on Sudarshan Kriya - One of the powerful breathing techniques taught in Art of Living Course Part 1.

1. Study conducted by Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore observed that after Sudarshan Kriya practice, there is a significant fall in the levels of Serum Total Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL, thereby making Sudarshan Kriya a tool for prevention of CHD (Coronary Heart Disease).

2. Peripheral blood samples of cancer patients taken before and after the Part 1 Course of Art Of Living were analysed for Natural Killer Cells and T - Lymphoyte subsets by flowcytometry. Results indicate an increase in percentage of Natural Killer Cells & T-cells Subsets - thus indicating that Sudarshan Kriya and Pranayam can go a long way to prevent relapse in Cancer Patients.

3. Sudarshan Kriya also produced Neuro Hormonal Responses - Plasma Levels of Prolactin were elevated but not those of Cortisol. Regular practice of Sudarshan Kriya lowered Plasma Cortisol thereby indicating lowering of stress and long term relaxation.

4. Subjects regularly practicing Sudarshan Kriya show increased Alpha as well as Beta activity indicating a state of heightened alertness along with calmness and deep relaxation.

5. Sudarshan Kriya and Pranayam relieve stress and improve the immune functions of the body.

6. Nimhans conducted clinical trials of Sudarshan Kriya in depression patients - results indicate that Sudarshan Kriya has significant anti depressant effects which compare favourably with imipramine - an established anti depressant.

7. Practice of Sudarshan Kriya and Pranayam helps the tobacco consumers to quit this habit and participants narrated that the 'urge' to consume tobacco disappeared.

8. Another study by Nimhans, Bangalore on effects of Sudarshan Kriya on alcohol dependent patients demonstrates that Sudarshan Kriya practice helps to reduce anxiety and depression in alcohol patients significantly. Thus Sudarshan Kriya can play a significant role in prevention and treatment of relapse in alcohol treatment procedure.

9. Regular practice of Sudarshan Kriya showed improvement in the sleep patterns of the subjects studied.

10. Subjects doing regular practice of Sudarshan Kriya showed an increase in plasma prolactin also termed as the 'Happy Hormone' thus making the subjects feel happy, cheerful, and relaxed and have a sense of belongingness with everybody
